School Bus Safety Tips

These bus safety tips are for parents and children alike and are a great review for all school bus riding children.

  1. Never rush, leaving yourself enough time to get to your bus stop following all bus safety rules.
  2. Always walk on sidewalks (if available).
  3. Stay safely back from the street while waiting for your school bus. Remain aware of traffic and safety rules by not playing and becoming distracted.
  4. Be sure the bus driver can see you by staying 10 giant steps away from the bus.
  5. The bus must stop completely before you approach it to get on or before standing up to get off.
  6. Avoid loose clothing and backpacks with strings, toggles, or key chains as they can get caught on the handrails or doors of the school bus.
  7. Use the handrails along the stairs of the bus to avoid trips and falls.
  8. When getting on the bus, find a seat and sit down immediately.
  9. Talking and laughing quietly on the bus is fine but do not scream and shout as it is distracting to the school bus driver.
  10. Never put any body part outside the bus window, even when the bus is stopped, because it is extremely dangerous.
  11. If you drop something in front of or around the bus, don't run to get it or bend over to pick it up because the driver may not be able to see you. Get the driver's attention first and ask for help.
  12. Always make sure the driver sees you and let's you know it's OK before crossing the street.
  13. Stay away from bus danger zones outside of the bus, especially the back wheels where it is difficult for the driver to see you.
